The Inland Empire Flute Circle Spring Gathering is May 19th,
2007, at
38766 Brookside Ave., Cherry Valley
from 11 A.M. to 7 P.M.
Join us for a day of flutes and fun!

This even will feature a beginning flute playing class, a flute making
workshop, wood carving demos, open mic and a free concert in the
evening

featuring Native American Music Award winner Scott August

with a pre concert performance of

traditional Bird songs by Ernest Siva.

and Marvin & Jonette Yazzie of Yazzie flutes

We are very honored to have so many talented people in one place.
There will also be many talented wood carvers, leather crafts and more.

December meeting

Greetings,

We will be having a flute circle meeting on December 2nd at Chuck Flanagan's home. David Archey will be showing us how to make a Pima flute. If you would like to learn how please let Chuck know by friday so he can let David know how many supplies to bring. We will be having a pot luck style meal, so bring something to share and a folding chair along with your flute.

Last meeting Antonio Flores showed us how to make Pomo flutes, their were 38 of us who gave it a try. Here are some photos from the last meeting.

You've got to really..

Just imagine hiking in to a remote site where you can see some of the most beautiful green trees, a creek that actually has water flowing without a site of trash, an abundance of wild life. Human contact is limited to those who respect and appreciate nature.(all this in So Cal?)
Our flute circle member Brain has extended an invitation to the circle to come up and enjoy his world four times a year, the first of which was 09/30. He will be planning a future trip in to his cabin and will have more information at the next flute circle meeting. We enjoyed being out among the trees playing our flutes, hiking the canyon and meeting other folks who are passionate about the area.
Oh yeah and some of the best food I've had while out "camping."

September flute circle meeting

We will be having a flute circle meeting Saturday, September 9th @1:00 at Chuck Flanagans home 38766 Brookside Avenue Cherry Valley 92223

Please bring a pot luck dish and a folding chair. We will have a raffle and several items have already been donated: Two flutes one made by David Archey and the other made by John Stillwell also a Dr. Payne CD donated by Chuck.

Scott August will also be giving a 1 hour class on flute embellishment (bending notes, chirps and trills). If you are interested in taking the class it is $10.00 all proceeds going to the Inland Empire Flute Circle. To sign up please contact Chuck at chuckflanagan@verizon.net

Dragonfly Gala to celebrate the music of Southern Californias First Culture

For centuries, music has been the heartbeat of the diverse American Indian nations of Southern California. For everything, there is a song. Music teaches, unifies, and strengthens the community. At Dorothy Ramon Learning Center's third annual Dragonfly Gala on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, a community of people from around Southern California will continue this tradition and celebrate the music of the First Cultures.

California has more Indian cultures and reservations than any other state. Yet even people living near these reservations often know little about the people who live there, their history, traditions, languages, art, and music.

The third Dragonfly Gala will feature the music of several Southern California cultures (including Cahuilla, Chumash, Kumeyaay, Luiseño, and Serrano) and honor those working to save this music and to share it with younger generations and the public. California Indian music is very different from the music of the Plains Indians. The most obvious difference is that songs are accompanied by rattles, not drums. The melodies and rhythms are often complex. The Bird Songs, to be featured at the Gala, tell of how the people came to their lands and what they found there. There are now several groups singing and sharing these songs, believed to be among the first ever sung in Southern California. The Learning Center's cherished Dragonfly Award will be presented for "high-soaring achievement in saving and sharing Indian music."

A dinner will be served featuring some Native American foods. Last year's gala, which featured Native American plants, drew a crowd of nearly 300 people from around Southern California. This year's event will feature demonstrations, exhibits, and booths that spotlight Southern California's own music.

The public is invited to share in this event, with proceeds going to support the work of Dorothy Ramon Learning Center, and Ushkana Press, a (501)(c)(3) nonprofit public-benefit corporation. The nonprofit Learning Center and its publishing arm, Ushkana Press, save, document, and share the Indian cultures of Southern California.

The Gala is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 5, from 4 to 8:30 p.m. at Morongo Community Center, 13000 Fields Road, Morongo Reservation, near Banning, CA. Individual tickets may be purchased for $40. Table (of 8) sponsorships with preferred seating are also available at the following levels:

Clapper Stick: $500
Flute: $800
Rattle: $1,000

There will be a silent auction featuring Indian art. If you wish to donate an item, please contact us.All contributions are tax deductible.
